How Exercising Improves Your Mental Health |Healthy Outlets

Updated: Jul 29, 2025

Why do people say that exercising helps them feel better? Endorphins.

Endorphins are chemicals the body produces to reduce pain, improve mood, and lower stress levels. Exercising is one of the primary ways to get the body to release endorphins.

Studies have shown that endorphins contribute to the following benefits:

  • Reducing stress and anxiety

  • Relieving symptoms of depression

  • Improving confidence

Exercising also serves as a healthy distraction. In exercising, we often set small goals such as doing 2 sets of pullups, 3 miles to walk, or 30 minutes of general activity. Completing the challenges that come with exercising and pushing the body aid in confidence building.

A side effect of exercising is the environment. No matter if you are going for a walk or working out at your local gym, this allows you to get out and socialize- even if it is just a nod or a smile. Exercising will enable you to gain confidence, complete goals, and socialize.

Setting the habit of exercising also provides a sense of accomplishment and aids in adding structure to your life.

TAKING A STEP

  • Set Realistic Goals: Be patient with yourself.

  • Find Activities You Enjoy: There is no need to make yourself miserable. There are many ways to get active. Find what you like.

  • Reward Yourself: We often punish ourselves when we mess up, but remember to reward yourself for the accomplishments and mini milestones.
