What are Coping Skills And Why Are They Important?

Updated: Jul 29, 2025

Coping skills are techniques and mechanisms used to help individuals handle stress, anxiety, grief, and other challenging situations. We all try to find ways to cope with the stressful situations life throws at us by doing a number of different things: eating comfort food, joining a run club, sketching, practicing breathing techniques, meditation, and taking a stroll. There are infinite ways to cope; it is key to find what works best for you (or your child).

Finding Healthy Ways To Cope

There are unhealthy ways to manage stress, like overeating, constant self-isolating, self-harming, and even compulsive spending. Not all coping defaults are beneficial to our health journeys. Finding healthy coping strategies leads to emotional balance, problem-solving skills, and a greater sense of resilience.
