Life can be stressful for everyone- kids, teens, and adults. Left unchecked, it can lead to chronic stress, a consistent sense of stress that causes aches and pains, insomnia, changes in appetite, and even emotional withdrawal. Since life presents various stressors, finding effective ways to manage stress is crucial.

The 5 R’s of Stress Management

Each R is a coping strategy of its own that can be used as a tactic to manage stress.

  • Rethinking involves changing your outlook on negative thoughts and challenging negative thinking for a more positive outlook.

  • Relax focuses on physical strategies to ease muscle tension since stress can display itself in the body as well as the mind. Practices like breathing techniques, getting massages, and even gentle exercising like swimming or taking a walk can aid in relaxing.

  • Release emphasizes expressing one’s emotions. This is where therapists recommend journaling, joining support groups, or even engaging oneself in the arts like making music.

  • Reducing involves minimizing your stressors. First, identify what your stressors are by listening to your body and taking note of how your body reacts to certain stimuli. After identifying your stressors, make a plan to combat anxiety to help you manage your stress better. Simple practices such as delegating your workload after noticing that large tasks create a sense of anxiety for you, or setting more boundaries in your life after noticing that you may stress more after saying yes to too many engagements.

  • Reorganization emphasizes restructuring priorities to boost productivity. Anxiety can come from prioritizing the wrong things. Stress can be increased, especially in cases where you feel like you are putting a lot of energy into something that is producing little results. To improve productivity and time management, try strategies like using project management software or calendar planners, categorizing tasks, or dividing complex tasks into more manageable steps.

Be patient with yourself through this stress management process. Track your progress and celebrate your milestones- even the mini ones.
